Let There Be Light

PSF 1517 This is my favourite Vials of Wrath album. I prefer the heavier sound. I like the more recent stuff a lot, but I absolutely love this.
Challenging Apathy
Challenging Apathy thumbnail
Challenging Apathy Where later Vials of Wrath albums are a lot more in the vein of atmospheric black metal, Let There Be Light is more like death metal with some ambient subtleties. This is most noticable in the vocal approach: Mills almost exclusively uses traditional death growls on this album, as opposed to his fantastic, wild shrieks on later albums. The theological lyrics were very present even then, however. Not as good as his later works but still very much worth a listen! Favorite track: Rise.
Metallurgical Fire
Metallurgical Fire thumbnail
Metallurgical Fire Vials of Wrath is known for making quality albums, but I prefer this to the later ones. I like the variety of approaches and sounds on this one, which has a more pronounced death metal flavor than the black metal primacy of the later albums. The vocals I especially respond to more on this one. This is a standout in works of Christian-influenced metal. Favorite track: Rise.
Matthew Skipworth

Matthew Skipworth It really is a slab of very cool doom/ death metal. Quite different to following VoW releases, but this is a great listen nonetheless. If you like your metal brutal, creative, with thundering blasting drums and some intelligent, thoughtful lyrics, you should get this! (Or buy the whole Vials of Wrath discography like I did- it's very good value for money!) Favorite track: From The Dead An Army Risen.

yourmetalfriend I want to call this black metal, but given its lyrical content, I guess it's technically un-black metal...if there is such a thing. Regardless of that, it's pretty damn good for a one-man band. Favorite track: From The Dead An Army Risen.

COLD CONTEMPT God, do you feel anger? Remorse? Regret? When you look down on your creation? Snakes that resemble men dwell among your children. And they feed. And they breed. Serpents feeling comfort There should be cold contempt Blind to their lies, we embrace them. We embrace them... Accustomed to their presence, seeking less of yours, solace in prayer slowly fades. Broken is Nehushtan, shattered as should be. Deliver us from the evil we condone. I will send venomous snakes among you. Vipers that cannot be charmed. And they will bite... they will bite you.

FROM THE DEAD AN ARMY RISEN The hand of the Lord was upon me, and I was carried out in spirit, and He set me in the midst of a valley which was full of bones. And I passed them round about; there were many so very dry. He asked me, ‘Can these bones live? Upon them now prophesy.” From the dead an army risen. The breath of life enter you. Creating flesh, ye shall live! And all will know I am the Lord! I prophesied as commanded. There was a noise, behold they shake. The bones then came together. Skin covered, but no breath they take. “Son of Man,” he commanded me, “Prophesy unto the wind. From the four corners, breath into these slain so that they shall live.” So I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath came into them, and they lived. They stood upon their feet. It was an exceedingly great army from the dead.

Rise 05:08
RISE Rise! A war has been declared! Arise now and choose your side. Fall! Down on your knees! Our triumph comes from prayer. Our struggle is not against the flesh and blood, but principalities of darkness. Rise! A war has been declared! To win we must be sanctified. Take upon you armor so you may withstand evil; holy armor of God, and having done all to stand, guard within you truth, righteousness and peace. A shield of faith will protect from fiery slings; helmet of salvation, and the sword of the spirit, to attack and defend against that which is unseen. A call to arms! Rise up and defend. A call to arms goes out to all men. Arise! A war has been declared. Arise! Arise and choose your side.

EVERY KNEE SHALL BOW Who are you to judge my service? To our own master will stand and fall. And I will stand, even when I’m weak, for the Lord strengthens me when I call. Receive the one who is weak and struggles with their faith. They may not see each day as holy, for giving praise. No one lives just to himself, and no one dies the same. In life and death we are the Lords, and glorify His name. To this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, to be the Lord of the dead and the living. For it is written, as I live: every knee shall bow before me, and every tongue confess, that I am God.

THE SHADOW OF DEATH In the void of despair, fear grips me without warning. When my faith is weak, it takes hold. Alone in my thoughts, like death, voices of doubt rise to take hold, leave me cold. Crying out in desperation In the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil, for you are with me I will fear no evil, for you are with me There’s darkness closing in Yet whom shall I fear? The Lord is my light and salvation! Alone in my thoughts, like death, voices of doubt rise to take hold, leave me cold. Crying out in desperation In the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil, for you are with me I will fear no evil, for you are with me
